What is ComedySportz?
Not comedy about sports, but comedy played as a sport! Two teams of act-letes compete for audience laughs and points while improvising scenes, games, and musicals based on audience suggestions. A referee calls fouls and keeps the match moving at a blistering pace. Audience members vote for the winners and sometimes even wind up on stage!
What is improv comedy?
Unlike stand-up comedy in which a single performer tells pre-planned jokes, improvisational comedy features groups of performers making up scenes and playing games on the spot based on audience suggestions. Every show is unique...with different players, different games, and different audiences supplying new suggestions.
What is a ComedySportz match like?
Teams play an average of seven to twelve performance games drawn from a repetoire of over a hundred improv games. In Forward/Reverse, for example, the referee sends the scene back and forth at will, as though scanning a scene on a DVD, to send the actletes into a frenzy. In Shakespeare a team will improvise a scene performed in Shakespearian style. In Blind Line players substitute some of their own dialogue with lines provided in secret by the audience. There are many different types of games involving story telling, guessing, action, audience volunteers, joke telling, and even music.
Whom should I bring to ComedySportz?
Unlike most other forms of performance comedy, ComedySportz is great for all ages. Our audiences include everyone from kids to college students to parents to grandparents. Everyone has a good time, and no one gets offended. If an actlete steps beyond the boundaries of good taste, the ref calls the Brown Bag foul (a brown paper sack is placed over the offending player's head). But if you think clean means boring, you owe it to yourself to check us out. It's anything but boring!
